Select your profession

It is an intractable task to make a career choice when you do not really know what you want to do. Here are hundreds of career options in job market. You will have to put some time and energy into making your decision in selecting your profession.

Follow these given steps to select your career choice:

E valuate yourself

You have to learn about yourself before you make a career choice. Your principles, interests, and talents, preferred environments, developmental needs, in combination with certain personality traits, can make some careers specially suitable for you and some particularly unsuitable. You can use self assessment tools and generate a list of professions that you can judge as correct. Some people choose to have career counselors or other career development professionals manage these tests but many go for using free career tests that are available on the internet.

Construct a list of professions

Look over the lists of professions created through your use of the self evaluation tools. Those are probably rather lengthy. You can come up with a much shorter list, consisting of between five and ten occupations. Circle jobs that appear on multiple lists. Circle jobs you may have considered previously and that you find interesting. Write these occupations down on a separate list. For each occupation on your list, look at the job description, educational and other requirements, job outlook, advancement opportunities, and earnings.

Gather information

At this point you should only have a few professions left on your list. Now you need to gather more in-depth information. Your best source of this information is the people who have firsthand knowledge of the occupations in which you are interested. Identify them and discuss with them. You can also research on the industries in which you would like to work and on the labor market.

Narrow down your list

Coming at this stage, you need to narrow down your list of possible employments based on what you learned from your research. For example, you may not be ready to waste your time and energy in preparing for an occupation for which an advanced degree is required, or you may consider the earnings for a particular occupation inadequate.

Generate your ambition

By now you should have decided on one occupation you want to follow. It's time to generate your ambition. After setting your goal, you will need to decide how to reach the goal. A career action plan will help guide you as you pursue your long and short term goals.

Train yourself for your career

To reach your ambition and be successful in your career, you will have to train up yourself with the demand of your profession. That could take the form of earning a degree, doing an internship or taking courses to learn some new skills.
